HAZARDOUS AREA EQUIPMENT, CATEGORIES AND ZONES GUIDE
All equipment and protective systems intended for use in potentially explosive atmospheres must be ‘ATEX’ certified, as required by the EU directive 94/9/EC.
A standardised marking scheme is applied to identify equipment suitable for a specific location. Equipment built to the requirements of the EPS Regulations carry the “Ex” symbol in a hexagon, the equipment category number (1, 2, or 3), the letter G (gas atmospheres) and/or D (dust atmospheres), and other essential safety information. A temperature rating is expressed as a “T” marking, and sometimes a gas group. These indicate limitations to safe use.
Hazardous areas are classified into zones based on the frequency and duration of the occurrence of an explosive atmosphere.
Zone 0, 1 & 2 : gases, vapours and mists
Zone 20, 21 & 22 : dusts
Classifications :
Zone 0 or 20 : Danger is present continuously or for long periods or frequently.
Zone 1 or 21 : Danger is present occasionally.
Zone 2 or 22 : Danger is not likely, or will persist for a short period only.
Equipment is categorised (1, 2 or 3) depending on the zone where it is to be used.
Zone 0 or 20 : category 1 equipment
Zone 1 or 21 : category 2 equipment
Zone 2 or 22 : category 3 equipment
